Guess Who's In The Hot Seat: The NC Double A
The National Collegiate Athletic Association or known as the NCAA has been in hot water lately. Having to been called out by almost everyone in the sports industry this past week and a half.
LeBron James did not hesitate to state his opinion on how the "NCAA is corrupt."In a short summary of explaining what James is feeling is that these young athletes should be compensated. College coaches make money and the program itself makes a lot of money, especially during championships and march madness. He also states, "I've always heard the narrative that they get a free education, you guys are not bringing me here for an education, you guys are bringing me on it to help you get to a Final Four or to a national championship." LeBron James who has been drafted in 2003 straight from high school feels like there should be a "farm camp" in place for these athletes who don't want to participate in the NCAA conference.
Adam Silver, the Commissioner of the NBA, has said that the league is conflicted about whether or not they should remove the one-and-done rule. "We think we have a better draft when we've had an opportunity to see these young players play at an elite level before they come into the NBA." Silver also questions would the league be better bringing in younger athletes, at least 18 years of age and using the G League to better prepare them as the program was designed to do?
I think so! I agree with LeBron, these athletes should have a farm league and build them up to the next level and let them decide to whether or not they what to go to college or head straight to the league.
Detroit Piston's head coach, Stan Van Gundy has expressed his opinions on the one-and-done rule on how it can be racist. Van Gundy also states, "The NCAA is one of the worst organizations--in sports, they certainly don't care about the athletes." I agree with this statement just because the NCAA does have selfish desires from these young athletes which is exploiting them for financial gains. With it being racist, I doubt it's a racial thing but I can see where the man is coming from with that angle.
Power and control are two key factors of racism but I'm still in doubt of the racism with this intent. The one-and-done rule is getting free labor because these players aren't getting paid and the organization is generating funds off of these athletes who are not being funded. Not to mention football and basketball are predominately black, so that's where Van Gundy throws the curve at. Since they feel like they're getting an education and extra meals they deem this to be okay.
Personally, I don't think the NCAA is fair because of their lack of respect for these players and what I mean by that is exploiting these college athletes for financial gain and the players are not receiving a dime. I would say, if there would be a farm league for all the organizations for basketball and including football, then who would want to go to college to play? So that's taking away talent from the NCAA and that's why they are trying to hold on to this rule.
